Educating others in our new Mindset Language
Show Notes Transcript

In the eighth short March episode, I'm looking at how we can help those around us to learn to embrace our new mindset language

I’m Dinah Liversidge and I’m a Coach and Trainer, a Celebrant and co-host of The Charcoal Hut, a woodland cabin in Myddfai, Carmarthenshire. I’m also a no-box-thinker. I believe when we stop trying to ‘think outside the box’ we take away labels and limitations that were always an illusion. There never was a box.

I love being a Coach, a Celebrant and a Host. All these aspects of my life help me achieve that illusive ‘work-life balance’ so many seem to be striving for. Join me in Myddfai in our woodland garden for a #MyddfaiMinute and listen to one minute of birdsong. I hope it brings you some peace.

I hope you’re enjoying my Podcasts. I’d love you to share them with someone you think would get something positive from them.

Speaker 1:

Hi there, I'm Diana Levi . Welcome to my No Box Thinking podcast. This is the eighth of my 10 short podcasts in March, and we've been focusing this month on our mindset, language, the words and the language that we use, the phrases we, we repeat to ourselves, the kind of story that's going on in our head, and the language. The words are so important. They have such an enormous impact on our outcomes, on our mood, on our self-belief, and even on the way we come across to others. So the language of our mindset is absolutely the foundation to build strong belief on self-belief , um, listening skills, communication skills, love, and of course a successful business. Whatever that looks like or feels like to you . All of that is built on the language we tell ourselves every day . And in this eighth episode, I was going to talk to you about how we can educate others in that new language. But you know, the best place to start with a new language is to do what we were all taught when we learned a foreign language. And that is to surround ourselves with the people who use the language that we want to learn. I know that French, which we all learned at school in England when I was growing up, my French always grew far more. My understanding of it, my use of it, my techniques in understanding how to phrase things, my accent, they all improved more in the two or three weeks holiday, a year that we spent in France than they did during the whole of the school term. And that was because I had immersed myself in the language. Everybody around me was using it. My parents would pick places to go where they knew English was not widely used so that we would use the language more. So what language are the people around you using? And whatever your native tongue is, that's not what I really am talking about here. What I mean is what

Speaker 2:

Kind of terminology? What words, what phrases? You know those people that when you say, how are you today? Instead of saying, I'm great, thanks. Always reply. Oh yeah, not bad. So how about thinking about the language of those around you? Is it inspirational? Is it motivating you? Does it uplift you? Does it challenge you? Or does it help you stay put? Does it make you feel stuck? Does it actually reinforce the negative messages that perhaps you are feeding yourself? We can choose to change that language, but if we're going to do it successfully, we need to surround ourself with people who use the kind of language that we're learning to use ourselves. Now, I appreciate that there will be many relationships where you can't say, well, he or she doesn't speak the kind of language I want, so I'm not going to have anything more to do with them. If only life was that simple, eh ? So this is where teaching them the new language becomes important. If you work with somebody, or for somebody that you feel doesn't use the appropriate language, you can set the tone. You can start to change the language and encourage them to notice and to change theirs. You know, they will be used to the way you say things or respond to things. And when you change it, they will notice. Now, they may not notice immediately. Give them time. This is your journey, not theirs, but use it repeatedly. Be more assertive perhaps, or more complimentary. Say no, occasionally there's a novel idea, eh ? Um, and the more you do this, the more they will notice the change in your language and the more likely they are to change theirs to go with it. I'd love to know how you get on. Do contact me, tweet with me, or connect with me on LinkedIn and let me know what language are you changing and helping others to change too . I hope you'll join me in the next episode. There's so much more to talk about for your mindset, language. Oh, and remember, there's no need to try and think outside the box . There really is no box .
