What do you want to take forward to your new normal?
Show Notes Transcript

As we start to emerge from lockdowns around the world, what do you miss so much from your old normal? Everyone's in such a hurry to get back to normal.
In this episode I ask you to think about what you really want to take forward.

Speaker 1:

Hi there. I'm Dinah Liversidge. Thanks for joining me on my no box thinking podcast. Each month, I take a topic and I focus on it in 10 short podcasts. And this is the first for this month. And I'm asking you to focus on one thing this month, as we're all rushing backwards, determined to get back to our apparently perfect lives before COVID, everybody's talking about getting back to normal. I'd like you to think about, instead of going back to normal, how about if we went forward with a new mindset?

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

Today I wanted to ask you the question, what was so great about the old normal? What was it about your life before these interruptions? That was so wonderful. You can't wait to get back to it. And I guess I asked that partly in a slightly challenging way, but partly, you know, there were things that were perhaps things we took for granted things we just thought of as part of our lives that actually it's only having been without them that we realize, Oh my goodness, those were the important things. Those were the things that I treasure and I can't wait to have them back as part of my daily or regular routine. But I also think that when we look back, we often do so through a bit of a filter. There's that expression, isn't there looking at life through Rose, tinted glasses, seeing things with a kind of cheeriness that doesn't really exist. And when we look back, often we do one of two things. We focus on the very positive or the very negative. And often we forget that the mundane, the things we tend to do on autopilot, but you ask most people who regularly took for granted simple things like listening to a favorite piece of music on their commute or stopping in at their favorite coffee shop to place that complicated order that used to put a grin on their face, but also a spring in their step for the day, or seeing that person on the platform that you're just not at in the morning. And there's that mutual kind of, Oh great. You're spending another day on this crazy journey of life too. Sometimes you've never even spoken to these people, but they were part of the daily moments that made up your routine. What have we really missed? Is it as simple as human interaction? I don't think so. I think there are many parts of our day, many parts of our lives of the relationships and friendships of the business, connections of the hobbies. There are many parts that in all sorts of ways contributed to what made up our life on a daily basis. And I think a lot of us were surviving getting from one day to the next and it takes a shakeup. Like we've had to notice the details to notice, what do I really miss? What do I most want to do when it's that level that allows me to get back to normal. I'd love you to spend a bit of time thinking about this and noticing what are the things that give me that little sort of Pang that yearning sense in my tummy that says, Oh, I really miss that because those are the things it is worth taking forward. Those are the things that matter deeply to you and that it is really important. You find and make the space for going forward. In the next episode, we're going to talk about the things that perhaps we'd like to leave in the past. I hope you'll join me and please don't keep me a secret, share the podcasts. If you're enjoying them. I'd love more people to stop trying to think outside the box that really never existed. Bye for now.
