What can nature teach us about change? Embracing a new language for a change mindset

Dinah Liversidge Season 2021 Episode 35

It's spring here in West Wales and we're getting a wonderful example of how nature shows us the way to embrace change. Everything in nature depends on change. When we change the story about change that we tell ourselves, we can be more in control of change in our lives and the way it impacts our mindset.

I’m Dinah Liversidge and I’m a Coach and Trainer, a Celebrant and co-host of The Charcoal Hut, a woodland cabin in Myddfai, Carmarthenshire. I’m also a no-box-thinker. I believe when we stop trying to ‘think outside the box’ we take away labels and limitations that were always an illusion. There never was a box.

I love being a Coach, a Celebrant and a Host. All these aspects of my life help me achieve that illusive ‘work-life balance’ so many seem to be striving for. Join me in Myddfai in our woodland garden for a #MyddfaiMinute and listen to one minute of birdsong. I hope it brings you some peace.

Speaker 1:

Hi there I'm Dinah Leversedge. Thanks for joining me on my no box thinking podcast. This month as spring Dawn's in the UK and a little later than some parts of the UK here in West Wales, I'm really aware of the part that nature plays in change. And I'm focusing this month on how change impacts our mindset and mindset impacts how we view and experience change

Speaker 2:

Today.

As I look out my window, I hear the birds singing. I see trees with catechins on them and leaves appearing for the first time. And I am reminded that when I can be present and slowed down enough to notice the detail, I see that change happens every year. And that that change brings great and wonderful opportunity. We're often trapped by this language we use about change and how it is out of our control. And it's very easy to get caught in a story that doesn't serve us when we face change. So how about this month? You practice being really present. Present enough to notice the changes going on around you. Present enough to listen for the sounds that have changed with the season to breathe in and smell the scent. We have beautiful plants in our Woodland garden. That smell incredible. There's an Azalea here. That's just about to burst into bloom. And if you stand close enough to it, you get the faintest promise of the scent that is to come.

If you slow down enough, you'll notice that everything in nature has to change in order to continue. There is no need to tell ourselves these stories to create a mindset that feels set in a certain path. When we take ownership of our mindset. And as I've described it in previous episodes of my podcast, when we treat it like the set of a play that between the scenes gets changed, we can see that making those changes can still be in our control. None of us could control what happened in 2020 and still continues for so many in 2021 with the pandemic that's gone around the world, but we could still decide to change the little details within our own lives. I became very aware as spring kind of Shaun on us here in West Wales, that I had changed some things in my, um, kind of response to the pandemic that weren't serving me anymore. And it was time to let them go. Now that doesn't mean they were a bad decision or that I had done something wrong. I had seen, I had to adapt and embrace changes during the last year and they can be for the short term. And I've changed ways that I respond to things on a daily basis. I've allowed myself to look at my diary and say, perhaps I can now be less busy this spring and a bit more present and notice how the changes in the world are having a really beneficial effect now for some of us. So take a look out of your window. If you have a space that you can go into, please, I encourage you to do that and take a few minutes to notice in that present moment. What is nature doing at the moment where you live? How are those changes occurring, and which of those feel positive and uplifting? I'd love you to let me know. And I'd love to see pictures of how things are changing in nature in your world. Connect with me on Twitter at diner Leversedge and share with me. How can you embrace change with nature where you're listening. If you're enjoying the podcasts, please don't keep me a secret. Tell other people that you think could enjoy challenging or looking at new ways to support their mindset. I hope you'll join me on the next episode. And until then, stop trying to think outside the box. This world needs no box thinking, speak to you soon.
